Pancreas Pals was started by Emily Goldman and Christie Leist in 2017, after the dynamic duo decided that their weekly phone calls and catch-ups focusing on their dia-lives would be helpful to those without a nearby community. After recording the calls and putting them on the world wide web, folks from around the world began writing in and expressing how less alone they felt. Now, with listeners across the globe and a growing community, we are proud to call all of you Pals. A note from Christie who is a forever pal, but on more of a contributing basis:

P-p-p-p-p-ancreas Pals!

Sorry, we’ve been talking about starting this podcast for over a year and I am just too excited that we are finally making it happen. When I met Emily last year, friendship fireworks went the heck off. When I need a second opinion about treating a blood sugar issue, sympathy for a crumby diabetic day or just a good rant session with someone who GETS IT, I turn to my Pancreas Pal. We want to expand this network.

My type 1 diagnosis was more traumatic for my mom than me, because the thing about DKA (Diabetic ketoacidosis) is it knocks you out, so you won’t remember most of the action. This all went down in July 2012, the summer before my senior year of high school. I would complain about the timing, but the truth is I had a whole year to learn about all this diabetes stuff…one more holla at my perfect mother who helped me embrace this new lifestyle on my own terms. Basically, Emily is my hero for handling her collegiate diagnosis like such a boss.

I’m currently headed back to school and will be taking a bit of a hiatus from the Pal-life, but not to worry – you can catch me on the interwebs!
